If you want a TestZeus Hercules alternative that lives in your coding agent's loop rather than a QA team's Gherkin suite, Reticle verifies each change from network, app state and console and replays it with no model. If your QA team writes Gherkin and wants one agent to run browser, API, security and accessibility checks together, Hercules is the stronger choice.

What TestZeus Hercules does

Its repository calls it "the world's first open-source testing agent", and the company's line is "Enterprise testing, agentified" (GitHub, testzeus.com).

You give it Gherkin feature files and get results back. A LangGraph planner, executor and assertion graph drives the browser and calls API, security and SQL helpers. It outputs JUnit XML, HTML reports, video and network logs. It has an MCP client and an MCP server (testzeus-hercules-mcp), a Docker image, and CI support. It is open source under AGPL-3.0, with about 1,200 stars on 2026-10-25; release 1.0.2 shipped on 2026-08-03. The hosted TestZeus Team Cloud includes 1,000 scenario runs a month at $0.99 per extra run; the base price is not clearly stated (pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. It also works on sites you don't own: it drives the page in its own browser and injects its SDK, reading network, console, DOM and routing; app state and file:line need the SDK in your own build. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0).

Where TestZeus Hercules is the better choice

  • Your QA team works in Gherkin. Feature files are portable, reviewable test assets.
  • Broad checks in one run. API, security, SQL and accessibility alongside the browser.
  • Enterprise apps. It is aimed at packaged enterprise applications.
  • Reports for humans. JUnit, HTML and video fit existing QA reporting.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The coding agent is the user. It calls Reticle in the same session, reads the verdict and fixes the code before it says done.
  • Same answer every run. Replay has no model: about 480 tokens to re-verify four flows, about 251 times less than a model re-drive.
  • Failures under a correct screen. Request counts, store values and console errors are checked against what the step should do.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms (scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes. Hercules can own QA's Gherkin suite; Reticle checks each agent change as it is written. How to keep an agent from grading its own work is in using Claude Code for QA automation. More tools are on the alternatives page.

FAQ

What is TestZeus Hercules?

TestZeus Hercules is an open-source, AGPL-licensed testing agent that takes Gherkin feature files and runs them with a LangGraph planner, executor and assertion graph. It drives the browser and calls API, security and SQL helpers, then outputs JUnit, HTML, video and network logs. TestZeus also sells a hosted Team Cloud.

What is an alternative to TestZeus Hercules?

An alternative to TestZeus Hercules for coding-agent workflows is Reticle. Instead of running QA's Gherkin suite, it checks each change your agent makes from network, app state and console and returns pass or fail with evidence, then replays saved flows with no model. For Gherkin-driven QA, Hercules remains the closer fit.

Is TestZeus Hercules free?

Yes. TestZeus Hercules is free to use as open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and it runs locally or in Docker and CI. The hosted TestZeus Team Cloud includes 1,000 scenario runs a month and charges $0.99 per extra run; its base price was not clearly stated when checked in October 2026.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
