Applitools alternative: check behaviour, not only how it looks

An Applitools alternative for checking behaviour under the screen: Reticle reads network, state and console inside your running app, open source, start free.

If you want an Applitools alternative that checks what the app did (requests, state, console) rather than how it looks, and that your coding agent runs itself, Reticle is built for that. If you want to know the app looks right across browsers and devices, Applitools is the stronger choice.

What Applitools does

Applitools' line is "AI writes code fast. Know it works and looks right" (applitools.com). Applitools Eyes adds Visual AI checkpoints to existing Selenium, Cypress or Playwright tests and compares screenshots with AI rather than raw pixels, across browsers and devices. Applitools Autonomous crawls a site, records flows, and turns plain-English steps into deterministic ones (Autonomous).

The Starter plan is $667 a month billed annually, and includes a Visual AI MCP server; Professional and Enterprise are custom (pricing, checked 2026-10-25). The platform is proprietary.

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay with no model in the loop. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0); the hosted platform runs the same checks on previews and pull requests.

Where Applitools is the better choice

  • Visual correctness matters. Layout, fonts and rendering across many browsers and devices. Reticle is not a pixel tool: in its own benchmark, a CSS re-tint that changed 2.3% of the screen was caught by a screenshot and missed by Reticle's always-on read (scorecard).
  • Design review. Figma and Storybook comparison, and a baseline review workflow designers and QA already use.
  • You have suites already. Eyes plugs into existing Selenium, Cypress and Playwright tests without touching app code.
  • Dynamic content and bulk approvals. It ignores dynamic regions and groups similar diffs so a team can approve them together.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The bug looks fine. A charge request sent twice, a write that returns 200 and never persists, a total that disagrees with the store. A screenshot of each is correct. Reticle reads the request count and the state, so the step fails.
  • The agent should check its own change. It calls Reticle in the same session and fixes the file:line before it says "done".
  • You need re-runs to be cheap and identical. One verdict across eight replays (0% flake), about 480 tokens for a four-flow re-run.
  • Budget and source. Open-source SDK, local by default, and you can start free.

Can you use both?

Yes, and it is a natural pairing. Applitools answers "does it look right?", Reticle answers "did it actually work?". A page can pass one and fail the other. The Meticulous alternative page covers the same split for a screenshot-diff tool, and why a green check isn't proof explains why the screen is not the whole story.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Applitools?

The best alternative to Applitools depends on what you need checked. For another visual testing tool, look at screenshot-diff products. For behaviour under the screen (requests, state, console) checked by a coding agent inside your app, Reticle fits. Many teams pair a visual tool with a behaviour check rather than choosing one.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Applitools?

Yes, if behaviour rather than visuals is the main need. Reticle's open-source SDK is free and you can start the hosted platform free without a card. Applitools Starter is listed at $667 a month billed annually. Reticle is not a visual testing tool, so it is cheaper for a different job, not the same one.

Does Reticle do visual testing?

Reticle does not do pixel or visual AI testing. It reads computed styles and the DOM along with network, state and console, but a screenshot is the ground truth for pixels. In Reticle's own benchmark a small CSS colour change was caught by a screenshot and missed by Reticle, so visual tools still have a place.

How is Reticle different from Applitools?

Reticle is different from Applitools in the question it answers. Applitools compares screenshots with Visual AI across browsers to check the app looks right. Reticle runs inside your web app in development and reads requests, state and console to check the change worked, then names the source line to fix.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
