Ranger alternative: verify agent work from inside the app

A Ranger alternative for verifying coding agents' work: Reticle checks network, state and console inside your running web app and names the file:line to fix.

If you want a Ranger alternative that verifies your coding agent's work from inside the running app (requests, state, console) and replays it with no model, Reticle is built for that. If you want browser verification with a Claude Code hook that nudges the agent automatically, plus an option for human QA review, Ranger is the stronger choice.

What Ranger does

Ranger's line is "Verify work as fast as your agents can write it." (ranger.net). Its ranger go command starts a browser, tests the feature and returns a verdict with screenshots, recordings and Playwright traces. A Claude Code plugin uses hooks to push the agent through a "Feature Review" step on UI work, and checks that pass can become permanent tests (hook system).

It also sells a managed service where AI-generated Playwright tests are reviewed by human QA. It is not open source, and we found no MCP server. Pricing is public: free forever, Growth at $50 per user a month, and Enterprise based on usage (pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0) and runs on your machine; the hosted platform runs the same checks on previews and pull requests.

Where Ranger is the better choice

  • You want humans in the loop. Ranger offers human QA review of AI-generated tests. Reticle has no human service.
  • You want a hook that enforces review. Its Claude Code plugin pushes the agent through verification on UI work automatically.
  • You want portable Playwright output. Checks can become standard Playwright tests.
  • You want rich artefacts for people, such as video and Playwright traces, attached to the pull request.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The failure is under the screen. A request sent twice, a write that never persists, a store that disagrees with the page. Traces of the browser show the page; Reticle reads the store and counts the requests.
  • You want the source line. On React and Svelte the verdict names the file:line, so the agent edits the right file in the same session.
  • You use more than one agent. Reticle speaks MCP to Claude Code, Cursor and Codex, plus a CLI and an HTTP endpoint.
  • You want model-free replay. Eight replays of a saved flow gave one verdict, and four flows re-verify in about 480 tokens, about 251 times less than a model re-driving them.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms, with one genuine miss (scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes. Ranger's hook and human review can sit on top of UI work while Reticle reads what the app did underneath each step. For a Claude Code setup that keeps the author and the grader apart, see how to use Claude Code for QA automation and Claude Code testing. More: all alternatives.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Ranger?

The best alternative to Ranger depends on what you want checked. For verification inside your web app that reads network, state and console and names the source line, Reticle fits. For hand-written cross-browser tests, Playwright fits. For browser verification with human QA review, look at other managed AI testing services.

How is Reticle different from Ranger?

Reticle is different from Ranger in how deep it reads. Ranger verifies a feature in the browser and returns screenshots, recordings and traces, with an optional human review. Reticle runs inside the app, checks requests, state and console after each step, names the source line on React and Svelte, and replays saved flows with no model.

Does Reticle work as a Claude Code plugin like Ranger?

Yes, Reticle works with Claude Code. Install it with the plugin or claude mcp add, or paste the skill line and let the agent wire it. The agent then calls Reticle during the session and reads the verdict before saying done. The same server works with Cursor and Codex through MCP.

Is there an open-source alternative to Ranger?

Yes. Reticle's in-app SDK is open source under Apache-2.0 and runs locally, and its server is source-available under FSL-1.1, which becomes Apache-2.0 after two years. Ranger is proprietary, though it has a free tier. Playwright is open source too, but you write the tests yourself.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
