If you want a Claude in Chrome alternative because Claude Code looked at the page, said it worked, and it did not, Reticle adds a verdict decided from network, app state and console, plus a deterministic replay. If you want Claude Code to drive your real, signed-in browser with no setup, Claude in Chrome is the first-party default.
What Claude in Chrome does
Anthropic's docs describe it as a way to "connect Claude Code to your Chrome browser to test web apps, debug with console logs, automate form filling, and extract data from web pages" (docs).
Claude Code, in the CLI or VS Code, talks to the Claude in Chrome extension and works in your visible Chrome with your login state. It reads console errors and DOM state, records GIFs and saves screenshots. You start it with claude --chrome or /chrome, and it appears inside Claude Code as the claude-in-chrome MCP server. It needs a direct Anthropic plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), not API keys or cloud providers. It works in Chromium browsers only, pauses on logins and CAPTCHAs, and JavaScript dialogs block it.
What Reticle does
Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.
Claude Code calls it through MCP. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. It also works on sites you don't own: it drives the page in its own browser and injects its SDK, reading network, console, DOM and routing; app state and file:line need the SDK in your own build. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0).
Claude in Chrome vs Reticle at a glance
| Claude in Chrome | Reticle | |
|---|---|---|
| What it gives Claude | Your real browser: clicks, console errors, DOM, screenshots, GIFs | A verdict: pass, fail or cannot tell, with evidence |
| Who decides it worked | The model, reading what it saw | A declared expected outcome, checked after the step settles |
| Network request counts and app state | Not the focus | Read on every step (state with the SDK in your build) |
| Re-running a check | Claude drives it again | Deterministic replay, 0% flake over 8 replays |
| Signed-in sessions | Uses your real Chrome profile | Its own browser, or your app's dev session |
| Plans | Anthropic Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise | Open-source SDK free; platform starts free |
| Other agents | Claude Code only | Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, any MCP agent, CI |
Where Claude in Chrome is the better choice
- Zero setup for Claude Code users. One flag, and Claude is in your browser.
- Your real profile and logins. It reuses the browser you are already signed into, which is handy for internal tools.
- Tasks beyond testing. Filling forms and extracting data from pages are things it does and Reticle does not.
- A quick visual check. For "does the page render and look right", watching Claude click is enough.
Where Reticle is the better choice
- The bug does not show on screen. A request that fires twice, a write that returns 200 but never persists, a store that disagrees with the total. Reticle checks request counts, state and console against what the step should have done, so these fail even with a perfect screenshot.
- You want the check to run again, identically. Saved flows replay with no model. Re-verifying a four-flow suite costs about 480 tokens, about 251 times less than a model re-driving it.
- You want the fix located. On React and Svelte the verdict names the source line, so Claude edits the right file.
On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms (scorecard).
Can you use both?
Yes. Claude in Chrome is good eyes and hands; Reticle is the check that decides whether the change worked and keeps that check for next time. Many Claude Code users will run both. The setup is on the Claude Code testing page, and why Claude's own "all tests passed" is not enough is in using Claude Code for QA automation.

FAQ
What is an alternative to Claude in Chrome for testing?
An alternative to Claude in Chrome for testing is Reticle, which Claude Code calls through MCP. Instead of Claude judging what it saw in the browser, Reticle checks network, app state and console against the expected outcome and returns pass or fail with evidence. Playwright MCP and Chrome DevTools MCP are other ways to give Claude a browser.
Can Claude Code test my web app?
Yes. Claude Code can test your web app through Claude in Chrome, Playwright MCP or Reticle. The first two let Claude drive the browser and look at the result. Reticle adds a verdict from network, state and console and a replay with no model, so a change that looks right but misbehaves still fails.
Do I need a paid Claude plan for Reticle?
No. Reticle does not need a particular Claude plan. Its MCP server and SDK work with Claude Code however you run it, and with other agents too. Claude in Chrome is the one that needs a direct Anthropic plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, not API keys or cloud providers.
Why Reticle
Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.
- Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
- Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
- Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
