Canary alternative: an open-source check inside your app

A Canary (runcanary.ai) alternative: an open-source SDK that checks your coding agent's change inside the running app and names the file:line to fix.

If you want a Canary alternative that is open source, runs on your machine, and checks your coding agent's change from inside the app (requests, state, console), Reticle is built for that. If you want a service that reads the pull request diff, writes end-to-end tests for it and runs them in a sandbox, Canary is the stronger choice.

What Canary does

Canary, from the YC W26 batch, says "Claude writes your code. Canary tests it." (runcanary.ai). It reads your codebase and each pull request diff, infers what the change meant to do, generates end-to-end tests and runs them against the preview app, then comments results and recordings on the pull request.

Inside the agent loop it snapshots the uncommitted tree, boots it in a sandbox, and tests before the task is called done. Execution falls back from deterministic Playwright to DOM and ARIA reads to vision. It works with Claude Code, Cursor and Codex through pull requests, a CLI and MCP. It is not open source, pricing is not public (checked 2026-10-25), and at launch it covered web only. Commenters on its Launch HN thread raised noisy pull request comments and test durability (HN).

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0) and runs on your machine; the hosted platform runs the same checks on previews and pull requests.

Where Canary is the better choice

  • You want tests planned from the diff. Canary reads routes, controllers and the change itself to decide what to test. Reticle checks what the agent drives and declares; it does not plan tests from a diff.
  • You want the sandbox handled. Canary boots the uncommitted tree in its own environment. Reticle runs against your dev server or preview.
  • You want nothing in your build. Canary needs no SDK. Reticle drives sites without it too, but app state and file:line need it.
  • You want results on the pull request as comments and recordings, out of the box.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The failure is under the screen. A charge request sent twice, a write that returns 200 and never persists, a store that disagrees with the page. Reticle reads the request count, state and console directly.
  • You want the source line. On React and Svelte the verdict names the file:line, so the agent edits the right file in the same session.
  • You want deterministic re-runs with a known cost. Eight replays gave one verdict, and four flows re-verify in about 480 tokens, about 251 times less than a model re-driving them.
  • You want it open source, local and priced in public. Nothing from your app leaves the machine unless you link a project.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms, with one genuine miss (scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes. Canary can plan and run tests from each diff on the pull request, and Reticle can be the inside check your agent runs while it works. FAQ

What is the best alternative to Canary?

The best alternative to Canary depends on where you want the check to run. For an open-source check inside your web app that your coding agent calls, reading network, state and console, Reticle fits. For hand-written cross-browser tests, Playwright fits. For another service that writes tests from each diff, look at other AI QA agents.

How is Reticle different from Canary?

Reticle is different from Canary in what it reads and where it runs. Canary plans tests from the code diff and runs them in its sandbox through the browser. Reticle runs inside your app, checks requests, state and console after each step, names the source line on React and Svelte, and replays saved flows with no model.

Is there an open-source alternative to Canary?

Yes. Reticle's in-app SDK is open source under Apache-2.0 and runs on your machine, and its server is source-available under FSL-1.1, which becomes Apache-2.0 after two years. Canary is proprietary and its pricing is not public. Playwright is also open source, but you write the tests yourself.

Does Reticle work with Claude Code like Canary?

Yes, Reticle works with Claude Code, Cursor and Codex through MCP. Your agent calls it during the session to verify a change and reads the verdict before it says the task is done. Setup is one pasted line, or npx @reticlehq/core init, and the same checks run in CI and on the hosted platform.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
