Spur alternative: verification inside the app your agent is building

A Spur alternative for developers whose coding agent should verify its own change: open-source, runs inside your app, checks network, state and console locally.

If you want a Spur alternative that your coding agent runs inside your own app while it builds, checking requests, state and console, Reticle is built for that. If you want an AI QA engineer that anyone on the team can direct in plain English, across web and real mobile devices, Spur is the stronger choice.

What Spur does

Spur describes itself as "an AI-powered QA engineer" that creates, runs and analyzes end-to-end tests for web and mobile apps using natural language (docs). Its homepage line is "Validate at the Speed of Generation" (spurtest.com).

Tests are written in plain English, generated from a video link, or imported from Playwright or Selenium scripts, and agents follow user intent rather than fixed selectors. Runs happen in Spur's cloud against a URL you configure, and steps can assert against network requests and console logs. A GitHub agent generates change-aware tests from each pull request, and an MCP server connects it to Claude, Codex, Cursor and others (MCP setup). It also has real iPhone, iPad and Android device labs.

Pricing is not public: plans are annual and based on test-run volume, with a demo for a quote (checked 2026-10-25). It is not open source.

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0) and runs on your machine; the hosted platform runs the same checks on previews and pull requests.

Where Spur is the better choice

  • People who do not write code own the tests. PMs and QA can author and run plain-English tests, with scheduling and shareable results. Reticle is a developer and agent tool.
  • You need real mobile devices. Spur has device labs and native iOS and Android support. Reticle is for web apps.
  • You cannot change the app. Spur tests any URL, including production, with nothing injected. Reticle can drive any URL too, but app state and file:line need its SDK in your build.
  • You want specialised agents out of the box. Spur lists exploratory, localization, UI/UX, functional and AI-feature testing agents.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The check belongs in the agent's own loop. Reticle runs in the coding agent's session, so the agent reads the verdict and fixes the source line before it opens a PR.
  • The failure is in program state. Reticle reads the app's store directly, so a total on screen that disagrees with the state behind it fails the step, as does a request fired twice or a write that never persists.
  • You develop locally or behind a VPN. Reticle runs on your machine against localhost; nothing from your app leaves it unless you link a project.
  • You want re-runs that cannot flake. Eight replays of the same saved flow gave one verdict, and re-verifying a four-flow suite costs about 480 tokens, with no model in the loop.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms; two of the other three are traps a correct tool must not flag, and one is a genuine miss. See the benchmark scorecard.

Can you use both?

Yes. Spur gives the whole team plain-English coverage of the product, including mobile and production. Reticle gives the coding agent a check inside the app while the change is being built. Exploration by an agent, and how it becomes a regression check, is covered in exploratory testing, rebuilt for agents.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Spur?

The best alternative to Spur depends on who runs the tests. For a coding agent verifying its own web changes inside your app, Reticle fits. For hand-written cross-browser tests, Playwright fits. For another plain-English AI QA agent that the whole team uses, look at other AI QA testing services.

Is there an open-source alternative to Spur?

Yes. Reticle's in-app SDK is open source under Apache-2.0 and runs locally, and its server is source-available under FSL-1.1, which becomes Apache-2.0 after two years. Spur is proprietary. Playwright and Selenium are open source too, but you write and maintain the tests in code.

How is Reticle different from Spur?

Reticle is different from Spur in where it runs and who uses it. Spur's agents test your app from its cloud, driven by plain-English tests anyone can write. Reticle runs inside your app on your machine, used by your coding agent, and reads requests, state and console after each step.

Can Reticle test apps behind a firewall?

Yes, Reticle can test apps behind a firewall, because it runs on your own machine against your local or preview app. Nothing has to reach in from an outside cloud. Cloud testing services like Spur need their IP addresses allow-listed to reach a site behind a firewall or VPN.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
