Skyvern alternative: verify your app, not automate a workflow

If you looked at Skyvern for testing your own web app and want a Skyvern alternative built for that job, Reticle verifies each change from network, app state and console and replays it with no model. If you want an AI agent that automates form-heavy workflows on any website, Skyvern is built for that and Reticle is not.

What Skyvern does

Skyvern's line is "AI agents to automate workflows on any website" (skyvern.com).

An LLM and vision agent drives a browser to complete workflows. It also markets browser testing that adapts to UI changes, though automation is its main use. It runs in Skyvern's cloud or self-hosted. Its hosted MCP server offers "118 browser and automation tools" to Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and others (MCP docs). It is open source under AGPL-3.0, with about 23,300 GitHub stars on 2026-10-25 (GitHub). Pricing: Free with 5,000 credits, Hobby $29 a month, Pro $149 a month, Enterprise custom (pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. It also works on sites you don't own: it drives the page in its own browser and injects its SDK, reading network, console, DOM and routing; app state and file:line need the SDK in your own build. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0).

Where Skyvern is the better choice

  • You are automating a business workflow. Filling forms across many third-party portals is its job.
  • A large tool surface over MCP. 118 tools for agents that need to do many things in a browser.
  • Mature hosted infrastructure. Run it in Skyvern's cloud without managing browsers.
  • Vision handles odd UIs. A screenshot-based agent copes with pages that have little usable DOM.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • You are checking your own app's behaviour. Reticle reads the request count, the store and the console after each step, so a double-submit or a write that never persists fails even when the screen looks right.
  • You need the same answer every time. Replay has no model in the loop: about 480 tokens to re-verify four flows, about 251 times less than a model re-drive.
  • You want the fix located. On React and Svelte the verdict names the source line, so the coding agent edits the right file.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms (scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes, for different jobs. Skyvern automates work on websites; Reticle verifies the web app you are building. The same split applies to Browser Use and Stagehand.

FAQ

What is Skyvern used for?

Skyvern is used to automate workflows on websites with an AI agent that combines a language model and vision to drive a browser. Typical uses are form-heavy operations across many sites. It also offers browser testing and a hosted MCP server with 118 tools for coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor.

What is an alternative to Skyvern for testing?

An alternative to Skyvern for testing your own web app is Reticle. It checks each change from network, app state and console and returns pass or fail with evidence, then replays saved flows with no model. For workflow automation on third-party sites, Browser Use and Stagehand are closer alternatives to Skyvern.

Is Skyvern open source?

Yes. Skyvern is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, with about 23,300 GitHub stars in October 2026, and it can be self-hosted. AGPL obligations apply if you modify and offer it as a service. Skyvern also sells a hosted cloud with a free tier, Hobby at $29 a month and Pro at $149.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
