If you are looking for a Playwright Test Agents alternative because generated specs check what the agent thought to check, Reticle verifies each change from network, app state and console and replays it with no model. If you want agents to write and maintain standard Playwright specs that run anywhere, Playwright's own agents are free, first-party and the right tool.

What Playwright Test Agents do

The Playwright docs: "Playwright comes with three Playwright Test Agents out of the box: planner, generator and healer" (docs).

The planner explores the app and writes a Markdown plan. The generator turns the plan into Playwright tests and checks selectors live. The healer runs the suite and repairs or skips failing tests. You install them with npx playwright init-agents --loop=vscode|claude|codex|opencode, and they use Playwright MCP underneath. They arrived in Playwright 1.56 (release notes) and are free under Apache-2.0. One documented caveat: the healer may skip a test it believes reflects broken functionality.

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works. Flows it drives are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. It also works on sites you don't own: it drives the page in its own browser and injects its SDK, reading network, console, DOM and routing; app state and file:line need the SDK in your own build. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0).

Where Playwright Test Agents are the better choice

  • You want standard Playwright specs. They run anywhere Playwright runs, in any CI, with no special tooling.
  • Cross-browser coverage. Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.
  • Zero extra cost. First-party and free, and compiled specs re-run without spending tokens.
  • Your team already lives in Playwright. Reporters, traces and sharding are all there.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • The agent writes the tests and the code. Generated assertions check what the agent decided to check. Reticle checks what the app did: a request fired twice, a store that disagrees with the page, a console error under a success toast.
  • You do not want a healer to skip the failing test. Reticle reports the failure with its evidence instead of repairing the check.
  • You want the fix located. On React and Svelte the verdict names the source line.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms, against 59 for a Playwright script (scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes. Let the agents maintain your Playwright suite as the release gate, and let Reticle verify each change inside the agent's loop before it says done. The head-to-head is on Reticle vs Playwright Test, and the broader comparison is on the Playwright alternative page.

FAQ

What are Playwright Test Agents?

Playwright Test Agents are three agents that ship with Playwright since version 1.56: a planner that explores the app and writes a plan, a generator that writes Playwright tests from it, and a healer that repairs or skips failing tests. You install them with npx playwright init-agents for VS Code, Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode.

What is an alternative to Playwright Test Agents?

An alternative to Playwright Test Agents is Reticle, which verifies each change instead of generating specs. It checks network, app state and console against the expected outcome of each step and replays saved flows with no model. For generating standard specs, Playwright's own agents remain the first-party choice and many teams keep both.

Can the Playwright healer hide a real bug?

The Playwright healer can skip a test it believes reflects broken functionality, as Playwright's docs note, so a real bug can end up skipped rather than reported. Review what the healer changed. A verifier that reads requests and state reports the failure with its evidence instead of repairing the check.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
