Katalon alternative: let the coding agent prove its own change

A Katalon alternative for developers whose code AI agents write: open source, no test IDE, and reads network, state and console inside the app, with the file:line.

If you want a Katalon alternative where the coding agent checks its own change inside the running app, with no test IDE to maintain, Reticle is built for that. If you want a QA-owned platform for web, mobile, API and desktop with low-code authoring and test management, Katalon is the stronger choice.

What Katalon does

Katalon, now branded "Katalon True", calls itself "The AI platform for software quality", and its homepage says "AI now writes code faster than QA teams can test it" (katalon.com).

Katalon Studio is a desktop IDE with low-code authoring plus Groovy and Java scripting on Selenium and Appium, for web, mobile, API and desktop tests. TestOps manages and reports, TestCloud runs on hosted browsers and devices, and TrueTest builds tests from production user behaviour. StudioAssist has an Agent mode that runs on HTTP MCP servers, and the pricing page lists a Katalon MCP server on Professional and Enterprise (docs).

Pricing is public: a free plan, Professional at $1,000 per seat a year as a limited-time discount from $2,199, and Enterprise custom (pricing, checked 2026-10-25). It is not open source.

What Reticle does

Reticle checks an AI coding agent's change from inside the running web app and returns a verdict with evidence. It reads the network calls, the application state and the console, and on React and Svelte it names the file:line to fix.

Your agent calls it through MCP while it works, in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. Flows are saved and replay deterministically, with no model in the loop. It also drives sites you do not own, reading network, console and DOM there. The SDK is open source (Apache-2.0); the hosted platform runs the same checks on previews and pull requests.

Where Katalon is the better choice

  • You test mobile, API and desktop too. Katalon covers all four in one tool. Reticle is for web apps.
  • Low-code testers own the suite. Studio's low-code authoring and TestOps reporting fit a QA team that does not write much code.
  • You want tests from production behaviour. TrueTest derives tests from what real users do.
  • You need a mature enterprise vendor. Katalon has a long enterprise footprint and hundreds of Gartner Peer Insights reviews.

Where Reticle is the better choice

  • There is no test IDE to maintain. The coding agent drives the app and saves flows; nobody writes or repairs scripts in a separate tool.
  • The failure is under the screen. A double request, a write that never persists, a store that disagrees with the page. Reticle reads those after each step.
  • The agent fixes it before review. The verdict names the failing request or state and, on React and Svelte, the source line.
  • Re-runs are deterministic and cheap. Eight replays of a saved flow gave one verdict, and re-verifying four flows costs about 480 tokens.

On 88 seeded bugs, Reticle caught 85 with no false alarms; a Playwright script caught 59 of the same 88 (benchmark scorecard).

Can you use both?

Yes. Katalon can stay the QA team's platform for cross-platform regression and test management. Reticle sits in the developer's loop, checking each agent-written change inside the web app before it reaches that regression suite.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Katalon?

The best alternative to Katalon depends on who owns testing. For developers whose coding agents should verify changes inside a web app, Reticle fits. For hand-written cross-browser tests, Playwright or Cypress fit. For another low-code enterprise platform, compare tools such as ACCELQ or mabl.

Is there an open-source alternative to Katalon?

Yes. Reticle's in-app SDK is open source under Apache-2.0 and runs locally, and its server is source-available under FSL-1.1. Katalon is proprietary. Open-source frameworks such as Playwright, Selenium and Cypress are also free, but your team writes and maintains the tests yourself.

How much does Katalon cost?

Katalon has a free plan, and its Professional plan is $1,000 per seat a year as a limited-time discount from a $2,199 list price, with Enterprise on custom annual contracts, as of October 2026. Reticle lets you start free with no card, and its in-app SDK is open source.

How is Reticle different from Katalon?

Reticle is different from Katalon in who writes the checks. Katalon is a test IDE where QA teams author scripted or low-code tests across web, mobile, API and desktop. Reticle lets a coding agent drive the web app, read network, state and console, and replay saved flows with no model.

Why Reticle

Your agent says it works. Reticle checks.

  • Checks each change inside the running app: network, state and console, not a screenshot.
  • Returns a pass or fail with the evidence and the file:line to fix.
  • Open-source SDK on your machine, or the platform on every preview and PR.
